"Autumn Leaves"

This song is luminous in its sorrowful thread. The allegory of falling leaves symbolizing a lost relationship is just brilliant.

The song, Autumn Leaves, was written in 1945 in French, "Les feuilles mortes" ("The Dead Leaves") with music by Joseph Kosma and lyrics by poet Jacques Prévert.

Yet!... I felt something was missing, I sensed there must be another part to this song and after a lot of searching I found there was!  Kosma and Prévert had written a two verse intro section, two opening verses which Johnny Mercer did not translate. So with some help from Google translations and my sister Becky (who is married to a Frenchman and fluent in French) I translated and worked the lyrics. For me the intro sections really deepen this song, which is already so lovely.

AUTUMN LEAVES
Joseph Kosma music, French lyrics by Jacques Prévert, English lyrics by Johnny Mercer  - English Intro Verses - Terri New
Autumn leaves fall and are swept out of sight
Words that you said have gone too
Autumn leaves fall and are swept out of sight
So are the memories of love that we knew

The wind of forgetfulness blows now and then
Into a night of regret,
That song you would sing, so often sing
Is echoing, echoing yet

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold

Since you went away, the days grow long
And soon, I'll hear old winter's song
But I'll miss you most of all, my darling,
When autumn leaves start to fall
When autumn leaves start to fall
